  • Witch Letter Letters reflect the sound...

... whispered or spoken to our mind's eye.
Bound by words they speak to those who know the secret meaning of sound.

The Witches Alphabet or the Theban Alphabet is a writing system with unknown origins. It was first published in Johannes Trithemius book «Polygraphia» in 1518. It was attributed to Honorius of Thebes. It is also known as the Honorian Alphabet or the Runes of Honorius after the legendary magus. Another name is the Witches Alphabet due to its use in modern Wicca and other forms of witchcraft as one of many substitution ciphers to hide magical writings from prying eyes such as the contents of a «Book of Shadows». The Theban Alphabet was introduced to the Witch-cult or Wicca by its founder, Gerald Gardner.

The Theban Alphabet bears little resemblance to other alphabets and has not been found in any previous publications prior to Trithemius book «Polygraphia». Today's representation of Theban alphabet and that of 16th century are conflicting. Character consistency starts degrading from the original forms and is questionable in the Wiccan version of the Witches Alphabet.

Languages and their written part change with time. With that in mind, I looked at original Trithemius work and at the other versions of Theban Alphabets from the 16 century to current times. Findings where used as an inspiration and reference to interpret Letters of Witches.

Theban alphabet is a living puzzle that changed with time and is in use by modern Witches. I took liberties to develop new characters to complete the Latin Alphabet while taking into consideration original forms and historical references. Letters of Magic call to be illuminated and this is my illumination of the Witches Letters.
